Personalize your fundraising profile with a photo or video of yourself. Use your profile to share fundraising updates, stories from the community you’re supporting, and facts about the global water crisis. Most importantly, tell people your personal story. Ask yourself questions like these:

Why are you passionate about this project?

What inspired you to start a fundraising campaign?

Why do you think water is a worthy cause?

Make a list of people you know. Aim for a hundred people - this is your donor network. You probably know a lot more people than you think. Start with a list of family, friends, schoolmates, and co-workers. Brainstorm by asking yourself questions like these:

Who is my…dentist, piano teacher, veterinarian, engineer, caterer, baker, teacher…?

Who do I know at the…library, bowling alley, museum, day care, volunteer group, grocery store…?

Who sold me my… house, bicycle, insurance, dog, cat, fish, furniture, jewelry, sports equipment, clothes, newspaper…?

Keep it concise. Tell people what you’re fundraising for and why it’s important to you. End your letter with a call to action – ask for the donation! Don’t forget to include a link to your profile where people can donate.

Some suggestions:

  • Give a deadline. Set a deadline and give your donors a sense of urgency.
  • Ask about matching gifts. Ask your donors if their companies have matching gift programs that match employees' donations.
  • Suggest a gift amount. Ask directly for a gift and suggest a specific amount to give.

Share about your fundraising campaign on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites. Challenge your friends to help you provide safe water to communities around the world.

Here's a sample post:

Help me save lives with safe water! I’m fundraising for a water project with WaterStep, and I need your help to reach my goal. Please support my efforts to save lives with safe water by visiting my webpage [insert link].

Use your online toolbox to set your goal, track your progress, and send thank you e-mails to your donors.

Other helpful things in your toolbox:

  • The link for your personal fundraising page. Be sure to include this link in every e-mail you send out - this way your supporters can find your page easily!
  • Donation form. If you have a blog or website, you can embed your personal donation form and progress bar on your own website.
  • Your profile. Change your profile picture, add fundraising updates, and share stories on your profile.
  • A list of donations. See all your online donations in an easy-to-view window and send e-mails to donors.

Gather your friends and family to host a small fundraising event. Here are some ideas:

  • Walk for water. In the developing world, many people have to walk up to 5 miles to find clean water. Organize a walk for water and ask family and friends to pledge $25 per mile.
  • Dedicate a holiday or birthday. Dedicate a holiday or your birthday to earning money toward your fundraiser by asking friends and family to donate money to your cause, rather than give you a gift.
  • Hold chili cook-off. Ask your friends and family to prepare a pot of chili. Charge a small fee for individuals who would like to enter a chili, and a small fee for attendees to eat unlimited chili!

Send a thank you note as soon as you find out you got a donation. Use the online toolbox to send e-mails, or keep a box of stationary handy so you can send out notes quickly.

What to include:

  • Thank you!
  • Tell your donors what their donation will do – how will having safe water change the community that they’re supporting?
  • Encourage your donors to help spread the word and share your web page with their friends.
